Contemporary style: the design of today

Contemporary style is today's design: clean lines, smooth surfaces, warm neutrals and matte black accents. Learn how to recognize and apply it.

Contemporary style is, quite simply, the design of today. It doesn't follow the rules of a closed movement like Nordic or Industrial: it takes what is being done right now in architecture and decor, and organizes it with clean lines, smooth surfaces and a warm, neutral palette.

That's why it changes over time. What was contemporary twenty years ago (glossy white, chrome, glass) looks cold today. Today's contemporary style favors warm neutrals, materials with a soft texture and curved shapes, without losing its restraint.

Not sure if this is your style? Take the “Find your design style” test: in eight questions it tells you your main style and your secondary one.

How to recognize contemporary style

Picture a living room with warm gray walls, a microcement floor, a low greige bouclé sofa and a travertine coffee table. A matte black metal floor lamp with an opal glass globe, a black-and-white abstract painting and a sculptural terracotta vase. Just a few things, all current, and nothing that takes you back to another era.

Contemporary, modern and minimalist: what's the difference?

They're often confused. Modern is a movement from the early and mid-20th century, with its own rules and iconic pieces; its warmer version is mid-century modern. Minimalist style aims to reduce everything to the essentials. Contemporary is freer: it can be restrained without being austere, and it adds warmth through textures and soft shapes.

Basic rules of contemporary style

  • Clean lines and simple shapes, straight or gently curved, with no moldings or ornaments.
  • Smooth, matte surfaces: lacquer, microcement, polished stone. Too much shine is avoided.
  • A warm, neutral palette, with contrast in matte black.
  • Few pieces, but with presence: a sculptural sofa, a stone table, a designer lamp.
  • Open, uncluttered spaces where natural light takes center stage.

Color palette

The base is warm neutrals: off-white, greige (the blend of gray and beige), taupe and sand. Contrast comes from matte black in profiles, lamps and frames, and color from an earthy accent, such as muted terracotta. Bold colors are used sparingly, almost always in art or individual objects.

Materials, textures and decor

Travertine and other matte-finish stones, microcement on floors and walls, smooth lacquer on furniture, powder-coated black metal, fluted glass and textured fabrics like bouclé. Texture replaces ornament: a microcement wall or a bouclé sofa is decoration in itself. Decor comes down to abstract art, sculptural ceramics and a green branch in a simple vase.

Typical textures and materials of contemporary style

Furniture

Low, modular sofas with straight arms or rounded shapes, in neutral fabrics. Enveloping armchairs on slim metal bases, stone coffee tables with solid bases or thin legs, and smooth storage pieces with no visible handles. Proportions are generous and lines are simple.

Lighting

Lamps that work as design pieces: opal glass globes, thin matte black metal frames, pendants over the table and floor lamps that define a corner. The light is warm and layered: general, reading and ambient. During the day, light curtains that let natural light in.

If contemporary style were a person

If contemporary style were a person, it would wear good-quality clothes with simple cuts: a fine-knit sweater, wide-leg trousers in earth tones and plain shoes. It would be up to date without chasing trends, and it would choose few things, but well made.

How to bring contemporary style into your home

You don't need to remodel to get started. These changes already make a difference:

  1. Clear your surfaces and keep just a couple of objects with presence.
  2. Paint in a warm neutral, like greige or off-white, instead of pure white.
  3. Add matte black in the details: a lamp, picture frames, handles.
  4. Choose a stone or textured piece, such as a travertine table or a bouclé armchair.

Styles that pair well

Contemporary shares ideas with Minimalist style and Modern classic style, so it's common for your result to blend two of them. If you want to see all 12 styles side by side, check out our guide to interior design styles.
